Session 5 - first day
Session 5, an all day session, began with introductions and an ice breaker activity. There are 6 consultants in this group, 5 boys and 1 girl. There were supposed to be 8, however 2 did not show up. The ice breaker activity was fun and this group is much more vocal so far. We had a lot of game play, instructions were to play 1 you know, 1 you don't know, and then we had open game play. The consultants also completed the typologies assignment - I did not have them take it for homework because we had enough time to get through it during the day. They seemed to get the overall concept of the typology assignment however the quality of input was not as good as the last group.
The all day session is a little more challenging for me than the 1/2 day sessions because I have to come up with enough "fun" activities to keep them busy, engaged, and entertained. I introduced the blogger with a little more instruction than I did for the last group. I instructed the consultants to please make their blog responses at least 4 sentences with the recommendation of more if possible. They seemed excited for the video closet as well. This group is not as shy as the other and I always have a volunteer, where as with the last group, I had to call on people. I had this group do Karoke as well to break the shyness barrier. Everyone did a song and the consultants enjoyed getting to act silly. I was impressed that they were all willing to participate and try something new.
The consultants were always ready for the next activity even before we were done with the one we were working on, therefore it is important to keep them coming in short intervals. I think that many activities for shorter periods of time will work better than a few for longer periods of time. With only having 6 consultants instead of 8, I think the transition from one activity to another should be smoother.
