Review June 12, 2006

Today was the first day of the first summer session. There are seven boys, five of them going into 6th grade and two into 7th.
They all have experience with gaming and seemed to like it very much.

We spent a lot of time with game play today. I think that is works well for the first day for a few reasons. One, they get it out of their system and are more willing in the next couple of days to work on other activities. Two, they get start to get an idea of what we are looking for and then they can pay attention as they play to those things. We also get an idea of what they are like as a group.

This group is more willing to go through tutorials and ask for help in order to learn a game. The last group just wanted to play and learn as they go. At the same time though, they jumped form game to game a lot, I think that is due to excitement and wanting to play everything before the day was gone. There was also always at least one wandering around hanging out watching the others. I asked them why that was going on and they said it was because they wanted to see what others were doing and really because they couldn't decide what to play.

We did two video closets and one paper evaluation today. Lunch arrived late but they held on. They did not want to leave the lab though, so we were in there form 8:30-4:30. They are really looking forward to testing games being made here at the university and also to playing all the games and learning some they have never seen.
